The 2004 Big Bertha Iron set is one of Callaway’s most forgiving iron sets ever

Golf, Sporting Goods, Sports, others May 20th, 2008

This set features wide soles, deep cavities, a slight offset, and Callaway’s VFT technology. These features combine to give these irons a high MOI (moment-of-inertia). Basically, the higher the MOI, the more forgiving the club is on mishits. By moving more of the weight lower in the clubhead and below the ball, it’s easier to get the ball airborne. Poor hits turn into OK shots. I’ve acutally hit the ground 3 inches behind the ball with a 4 iron from this set, and the ball still got in the air and went straight. It only went about 130 yards, but my playing partners just thought I was laying up. Besides that, I personally think these are the best looking Big Bertha irons yet.

Leaving Feedback as a Buyer or Seller

Professional Buying, Sales Reports, Shoes, Sporting Goods, Sports, my chicago, phone May 18th, 2008

First why write this? I had a customer treat me like a bully and I realized I was doing something others hated and didn’t realize it. I asked them to give me feedback and they asked me if I was happy that I got paid. Wow, I was being a feedback bully and I didn’t even realize it.
As a Seller:

Leave your positive as soon as you get paid. Your satisfaction over the transaction should only rely upon being paid, period. Everything else is reliant upon how you as the seller handle things such as the product, truthfulness in your statements, the packaging, shipping, and all your communications with your customer. For most buyers, as long as you deliver on your sale, they will be happy. Trust and you shale recieve.
As a Buyer:

Just be fair and leave a positive or nothing at all. If you had a somewhat bad experience and the product wasn’t what you wanted, or the shipping was late, or any of the other reasons why your experience could be bad, work with the seller. Most sellers will fix things. Even if the seller says As-Is they may still try to make things right.

If the problem is minor and the seller isn’t willing to remedy things it still may warrant a negative but at least give them a chance to prove the axiom “The Customer is always Right” not the axiom Caveat Emptor.
Final Thoughts:

I understand; if you get really crappy service, shipping, untruthful statements, leave a negative. Flame the buggers! That’s why the negative exists and it makes it easier for the rest of us to learn from your bad experiences.

Remember, as a seller or a buyer you can always have a second word on any feedback. You can even mutually remove feedback, so don’t hold back. As a seller, if you liked getting paid, say so. As a buyer. if you liked your purchase say so.
Don’t hold back and don’t blackmail for feedback. It makes you look like you are hiding something. It makes you appear untrustworthy.

Everything You Need To Know About Buying GOLF GRIPS

Sports November 22nd, 2007

So you’re thinking about buying golf grips and regripping your own clubs. It’s really not hard and you’ll save some bucks. New grips will save you about 4-5 strokes per round! When buying on eBay remember that grips are rubber and get brittle when old. Buy from someone that has factory FRESH grips. Here’s some things you need to decide:

Which brand? The three largest grip manufacturers are Golf Pride, Winn and Lamkin. All three make a wide variety of styles, textures and rubber compounds. They all do a big job of advertising on television and in print ads. The only problem with that is, the consumer is the one that ends up paying for that advertising. Next are the companies that make premium quality grips but don’t do much national advertising. These are the companies that will give you the best quality grip for your buck. Those include Avon (played on every pro tour), Tacki-Mac USA and Kelmac (Golf Pride’s sister company). These companies also make a wide variety of styles to fit most everyone’s preference. With the increase in golf play in this country a number of overseas companies have hit the US market. Some of them probably make decent grips but as with many imports, the quality of materials may not be up to top standards.

What size? There are Junior, Ladies and Men’s outside diameters. The men’s include standard, midsize (+1/16″) and Jumbo (+1/8″). A good rule of thumb to determine the correct size: if you wear a men’s or cadet large golf glove you should use oversized golf grips. Arthritic or stiff fingers and hands will also benefit from oversized grips and Tacki-Mac makes a special arthritic grip that requires less grip pressure. Standard junior club shafts are .500″ diameter. Ladies .560″ and men’s .580 or .600″. Men’s golf grips come in .580, .590 (to fit both shaft sizes) and .600″ inside diameter. .580 grips can be used on .600 shafts but will require a little more pressure to install and finish very slightly oversized. .600 grips work well on .580 shafts by adding a couple of layers of common masking tape under the grip tape.

Tools required to regrip: a bench vise or “C” clamp and a rubber golf shaft clamp to hold the club while installing grips. A utility knife with a “hook blade” to remove old grips. Golf grip tape gets slippery when activated with mineral spirits to help grips slide on easily. The Airgripper ™ is the easiest way of all, using compressed air so the grip glides on with no effort. A good grip supplier will include detailed regripping instructions. Give regripping a try, you’ll be glad you did.

Choosing the Best Golf Irons for You

Sports November 22nd, 2007

Types of Irons

Cast irons have a cavity back construction, also known as perimeter weighted irons, most of the club head weight is on the outside of the head. They tend to have a larger sweet spot because it puts more weight on the edges of the club face. Cavity back/perimeter weighted irons on the whole tend to favor high handicap golfers due to there more forgiving design. This is an example of a cavity back iron.

Forged Irons have no special weight distribution on the back of the club head. The center of gravity is in the center of the club head, most forged irons also have the weight higher in the face, allowing the advanced player to better control trajectory. Forged irons are less forgiving than cavity back irons and are therefore recommended only for more experienced players. Today these clubs are more commonly known today as blades. These tend to favour Lower handicap golfers as they have a smaller sweet spot and give the golfer more control of the shot. Here is an example of a forged back golf club.

Different Clubhead Sizes

Standard
Similar to the smaller sizes of traditional clubs, however they are better suited to a more advanced player as the size of the sweet-spot is smaller, therefore Standard size clubs will be less forgiving on off centre hits.

Midsize
Midsize are a combination of traditional and oversized irons, they offer a bigger sweet-spot than standard clubs so they are more forgiving for the mid-high handicap golfer. They are easier to handle than the oversize clubs.

Oversized
Oversized club heads have an even larger sweet-spot than the midsize clubs. Oversized irons are more difficult to control for a low handicap player.

Different Clubhead Material

Stainless Steel and Titanium

Most cavity-back irons are cast iron, which makes them good for less-advanced players looking for durability and consistency. Although many of today’s cast golf clubs can offer similar, if not better playability than forged. Forged irons are made of a softer steel, which provides better feel to more advanced players.
Titanium tends to be a lot lighter than Cast iron and Steel, therefore heads are made larger than traditional standard which in turn provides more forgiveness on miss-hits, the draw back is that Titanium is more expensive than steel.

Types of Shafts

Steel Shafts
Steel shafts are stronger, more durable and generally less expensive than graphite. They have greater consistency from shaft to shaft because they go through a more advanced manufacturing process.Steel shafts offer more control, but require a faster swing speed to generate the same distance as graphite. Below is an example of a steel shaft.

Graphite
Lighter than steel, and can be made in many more variations, making it easier to select a shaft best suited to your game. They are generally more expensive than steel and less durable. Lighter weight provides greater swing speed for more power, but it sacrifices control due to the flex generated during the swing.

Flex
Flex refers to the amount of “bend” in the club shaft, your shaft flex needs to match the speed of your golf swing.
Beginners and players with less powerful swings will benefit from a more flexible shaft.
An average player has a swing speed of 75-90 mph, and should look for a regular shaft
Players with powerful swings - in the 90-110 mph range - should purchase a stiff or firm shaft. This will provide a stiffer club for more control.
Shaft flex impacts, either directly or indirectly, the accuracy, trajectory and distance of your shot.
As the shaft flexes throughout the swing, the position of the clubhead changes. And the face of the club must be square (perfectly straight) at impact. If you have clubs with a shaft flex that is not stiff enough, the clubhead will be tend to be closed at impact, sending the ball out to the left (for right-handed players). If the flex of your clubs is too stiff, the clubface will tend to be open, sending the ball out to the right. The degree of flex in your club shafts is something you control. You can choose to buy stiffer shafts, or softer shafts, depending on your needs.

Flex General guidelines:
Take a look at the distance you hit your driver. This is a good, but very general, indicator. If you carry you driver 250 yards or more, go with Stiff; 230-250 yards, Regular; 200-230 yards, Senior; less than 200 yards, Ladies. Only the biggest of the big hitters is going to need Extra Stiff. For most of us, Extra Stiff isn’t even in the picture.
If you have a very smooth swing, you might benefit from a softer flex even if you swing very fast. A swing that gets jerky at the top - when transitioning into the downswing - will probably need a stiffer shaft.
If your drives go left, you might benefit from a stiffer flex; if your drives go right, you might benefit from a softer flex.
